Getting Through My Interview Archives Vol.1: Ryan Coogler
Happy Black History Month! I've been interviewing our heroes for a decade and it's time to go back in the archives.
Happy Black History Month and Sunday! I am sending love to everyone right now. I haven’t decided where my voice fits in all of the current discourse about all of the heartbreaking, devastating and shameful chaos in our country currently. I stopped writing about tragedies somewhere around Trayvon Martin. or was it Mike Brown. maybe Tamir Rice. but definitely after Sandra Bland and before Breonna Taylor. tears blended with ink for Gaza and i’ve been empty since the first foil blanket went over bodies in detention centers.
and there are people I feel who were born to write about this moment, i’m just not sure i’m one of them.
but what I do know is that i’ve tried my best to keep writing about the things and people who bring a little light into the world despite all the darkness. so, this Black History Month, i’m sharing interviews with some of the people i’ve had the privilege of giving flowers to via my pen.
first up is Ryan Coogler. Sinners is the most nominated film in Oscars history and the Nets can go 0-82 and I’ll look at you like this s*** gravy, you know? I love Ryan’s work. I love his braids. I love his refusal to code switch. I love his commitment to telling our stories for us. I was excited to chat with him about producing Steph Curry’s documentary Underrated a few years back and I got to throw in some questions about his past life in sports, his process and what it means to be, well, underrated.
hope you enjoy!
